In today’s retail landscape, there’s a growing demand for organic products across various sectors, and mattresses are no exception. With an increased focus on health and sustainability, consumers are now more inclined than ever to invest in organic sleep solutions. As a mattress retailer, it’s essential to understand why this once-niche market is becoming mainstream and how you can expand your business with organic—the bedding industry’s fastest-growing segment.
1. Health Consciousness: There has been a steady increase in health-conscious shoppers as people have become aware of potential risks associated with conventional products. For example, flame retardants are used in products from clothing to electronics to conventional mattresses despite being linked with serious health concerns. This consumer shift is driven by a broader understanding of how daily exposure to toxins can impact long-term health, leading consumers to seek safer alternatives.
2. Environmental Awareness: The global push for environmental sustainability has led many consumers to seek responsibly sourced and manufactured products. This isn’t just a trend – it’s a movement supported by mounting evidence of climate change and the environmental impact of industrial practices. Millennials, who recently surpassed Boomers as the largest consumer group, are well-known to value purpose-driven brands and are willing to pay more for sustainable products.
3. Comfort and Quality: Organic mattresses are made with naturally breathable, moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating materials, such as organic cotton and wool. Memory foam requires the addition of cooling fabrics and additives to provide a cooler and more comfortable sleep experience.
4. Increased Variety: Consumers want choices, and organic is just one more way to connect. If you are worried that organic mattresses may impact the sales of your conventional mattresses, don’t worry! Consider supermarkets that sell many types of products, organic and otherwise. Grocery shoppers already know what they are interested in and can afford. The same is true for mattresses.
Offer a variety of models, allowing customers to choose based on their preferences and budget. This method helps integrate organic mattresses alongside regular products without the necessity of making direct comparisons.
5. Consumer Trust: Certifications like GOTS, MADE SAFE®, and the EWG VERIFIED® mattress standard introduced earlier this year make it easier for consumers to identify and trust organic products. Many health-conscious consumers are already aware of EWG VERIFIED® through guides and an app published by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which consumers use to provide information about skincare, personal care, and household products.
