ICFA Releases 2025 Outdoor Living Trend Report

Furniture World News Desk on 3/27/2025

The International Casual Furnishings Association (ICFA) has published its 2025 Outdoor Living Trend Report, highlighting consumer behaviors, purchasing plans, and emerging product trends in outdoor furniture and accessories. The report includes findings from a nationwide survey conducted by Wakefield Research among 1,000 U.S. adults.

According to the study, 77% of consumers with access to outdoor living areas—such as porches, patios, balconies, or decks—report that they are not spending as much time outdoors as they would like. Additionally, 54% of respondents indicated they have either no outdoor furniture or furnishings in need of full replacement.

"We can practice self-care any time, any day, just by walking outside our front or back doors," said Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance and senior advisor to ICFA. "Find a favorite spot to read, eat, work, or just relax and make it your own outdoor oasis."

The survey also found that:

  • 85% of U.S. households have some form of outdoor living space.
  • 59% plan to purchase new outdoor furniture or accessories in 2025.
  • 76% of millennials are likely to make outdoor living purchases.
  • 57% of consumers prioritize buying exactly what they want, even at higher prices.
  • 67% value practicality and durability over style (33%) when selecting outdoor furnishings.
  • 80% have at least one outdoor furniture or décor item on their wish list. Top items include lounge chairs, lighting, fire features, shade products, dining furniture, accent benches, porch swings, rugs, pillows, and sofas.

Barriers to improving outdoor spaces include upkeep and maintenance of furniture (42%) and uncertainty about design choices (34%).

After making updates, consumers expect to use their spaces more frequently for relaxing (72%), spending time with family and friends (60%), dining outdoors (55%), socializing (48%), and entertaining (44%).

The report also includes new product trends and design insights from ICFA member manufacturers, available for download at icfanet.org/news/2025_trend_report.
