The Research Association of Long Island, New York, recently completed the 2024 WAC Lighting
Invitational Science Fair, held earlier this year at Syosset High School. For the 14th consecutive year, the event
provided nearly 500 high school students from Long Island with an opportunity to present their research projects to
esteemed judges from leading institutions and businesses.
The Research Association, a consortium of 11 high schools, supports scientific research as an avenue for
understanding the nature of science and fostering student development. "The great thing about this science fair is
that our judges are scientists, and they engage our students in high-level conversations about their work," said
Allyson Weseley, President of the Research Association. "We are very thankful to WAC for making this science fair
possible."
About the Event
The science fair featured nine categories, including Earth and Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology, Prototype Engineering, Behavioral Science, and more. Participating students spent months, and in some cases
years, conducting research in labs to explore topics such as cancer treatments and energy-efficient fuel
alternatives.
Awards and scholarships will be presented to winners of First, Second, and Third Place, as well as Honorable
Mentions. The event drew over 135 judges, including academicians and professionals from institutions such as
Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Columbia University, and Mount Sinai Medical Center,
among others.
Many past participants have gone on to pursue advanced studies at institutions like MIT, Harvard, Yale, Johns
Hopkins, and Stony Brook University, demonstrating the fair’s role in fostering academic and career
development in the sciences.
Supporting Innovation and Education
The WAC Lighting Foundation supports the event as part of its commitment to promoting education and the pursuit of
scientific careers. Results from the 2024 fair are available on the Research Association’s website at www.researchassociation.org/results.aspx.
