Knob Creek Cherry Dresser

Hello, What kind of finish did Knob Creek use on their Cherry Dresser tops? I had placed a vinly plastic carpet runner protector UPSIDE DOWN ontop of mine to protect it from a cat. The dresser now has little blisters that look like the side that was not against it!!! Help! I planned on using 0000 steel wool to smooth down. But want to know what I can use to top coat it ... Lacquer, poly, varnish etc... It is in my little house so I am hoping for something safe to use inside?
