mengel dresser and side dresser

Help!

I recently reclaimed / trash picked a 6 draw mingle dresser and small side dresser.  Almost in perfect condition, but their are two or three chips on the top.  The top looks like veneer.  Should I refinish the top?  I am considering on removing the veneer to get rid of the chips and paint them.  Should I do that or just keep them as they are?  

I don't want to ruin great furniture, please help me out if you are an expert or just more knowledgeable than me
