What are the marks on my Benington Pine Table?

I inherited a beautiful Bennington Pine dining table and chairs from my patents, which I love!  But lately, for some reason, marks have started to develop on the surface of the table.  They look like they could be wax, but I am careful not to blow candles out on the table, so I know that's not the cause.  The marks smudge a little when I rub them.  At first it was just in some areas, but now the entire surface seems to have them.  Help!  I love this beautiful table but need to know how I can remove these strange spots!  Thanx!
